Legendry vocalist Pandit Bhimsen Gururaj Joshi, who enthralled generations of connoisseurs with his renditions of Indian classical music, passed away at the city hospital in Pune after the prolonged illness. He was 88 years olds.

Pt. Bhimsen Joshi was born on 4th February 1922 in Kannadiga family in the town of Ron in Gadag district of Northern Karnataka. His father was a school teacher. Bhimsen was eldest in the family of 16 siblings.

As a child, Bhimsen’s craving for music was evident to his family as he managed to lay his hands on the ‘tanpura’ of his grandfather. Music had such a great magnetic pull over him that even a ‘bhajan’ or ‘azaan’ from a nearby mosque would draw him out of the house. He heard the recording of Abdul Karim Khan’s Thumri “Piya Bin Nahi Aayat Chain” in raga Jhinjhoti when he was child and decided to become a musician. He left home when he was 11 and went to Pune to learn music. Later he moved to Gwalior and admitted in Madhava music school. He traveled for three years in North India trying to find a Guru. His father succeeded in tracking him and brought him home.

In 1936, Sawai Gandharva agreed to be his guru and taught him music. He performed live for the first time in 1941. His performance at the concert in 1946 to celebrate his guru’s 60th birthday won him accolades from audience and his guru.

Pt. Bhimsen Joshi was awarded Bharat Ratna Award – the highest civilian award on 10th February 2009. He was also conferred ‘Natak Academi Award (1976), ‘Padma Bhushan’ (1985) and ‘Padma Vibhushan’ (1999). He was the most powerful figure on the Indian music concert of ‘khayal gayki’.
